I'm Barry Faassen. I've spent 25 years building software, and the longer I do it, the clearer one thing gets: the tech was never the point. The problem is.

Mulhacén Labs is my independent studio in southern Spain. I work with startups and creatives chasing an idea that matters, and I build the software that gets them there — not a seat to fill on someone's team, not a technology to show off, just a problem worth solving, solved properly.

Where I earned it

Before this, I spent years on mission-critical systems for Fugro, Shell, Rabobank, Deltares, and SITA: geotechnical platforms with 30+ years in production, financial rating engines, 3D subsurface simulators for oil exploration, airport control software. I bring that same standard of architecture, testing, and maintainability to a two-person startup's first product as I brought to a bank. Deep enough for the hard stuff, close enough that you work with the person doing the work.

What I believe

• The tech is the tool, not the pitch — I reach for AI, .NET, or C++ because your problem needs it, not because it's on a trend list.

• Clean architecture over quick hacks — it should still be maintainable years after the first commit.

• Owned, not rented — you get the source, the documentation, and deployment in your own environment.

• Honest scoping — fixed prices where it makes sense, clear deliverables, no surprises. And I'll tell you if I'm the wrong person for the job.
